Phuket, Thailand

Phuket was one of the best places in Asia we went for herps. It is mainly dense rainforest. At our hotel, the owner said that they had put out snake repellent and that there were no snakes there. Sure enough, as we were first guided to our hotel room for the first time, we saw a dead snake on the side of the trail that had been tangled up in the wire.

Indo-Chinese Rat Snake (Ptyas Mucosus)

Our first live herp was this cool treefrog, probably a Four-lined Treefrog (Polypedates leucomystax):

The next morning, we found lots of Many-lined Sun Skinks & Speckled Forest Skinks scampering around on the trails.

Many-lined Sun Skink (Mabuya multifasciata)

This one had 2 tails!!!

A really cool yellow & black caterpillar

An Indo-Chinese Rat Snake (Ptyas Mucosus) that was found right next to the trail:

It disappeared into the grass after it saw us:

A Four-lined Treefrog (Polypedates leucomystax) found in our  room:

Speckled Forest Skinks were the skinks that we saw:

Speckled Forest Skink (Mabuya macularia)

Common Greenback Frogs were everywhere around the ponds.

Common Greenback Frog (Hylarana erythraea):

Asiatic Toad

Copper-cheeked Frog

Banded Bullfrog (Chubby Frog)

Phuket was definitely one of the better herp locations in Asia and the Indo-Chinese Rat Snake was really cool.
